Authentic Taverns & Local Favorites
Athens does casual dining better than almost anywhere else. It’s a city where an unassuming taverna with plastic chairs and a vine-covered terrace can serve one of the best meals of your life. Taverna culture is loud, lively and deeply Greek - long tables, plates meant for sharing and endless carafes of wine or ouzo. Expect big portions, simple flavours and the kind of food that feels like home cooking, but better.
Taverna Klimataria - Omonia
One of Athens’ oldest tavernas, Klimataria has been serving no-fuss Greek food since 1927. Slow-cooked lamb, rich stews and homemade pies fill the menu and if you stay for dinner, expect live Greek music to set the mood.
What to order: The lamb, it has been slow cooking for hours and hours, their moussaka is pretty special, the bamies (okras) were exceptional as well.
Taverna Oikonomou - Ano Petralona
A neighbourhood institution serving classic, slow-cooked Greek comfort food. It’s cozy, unfussy and exactly what you want from an Athenian taverna.
What to order: Stuffed tomatoes, beef kokkinisto, rabbit stifado and their home-made bread. Actually everything on the menu
Avli - Psirri
A hidden courtyard in the heart of Psirri, Avli is the definition of laid-back Athenian dining. Set in a little courtyard, surrounded by old buildings, you are transported to Athens of yesteryears. The food, simple, homey flavours, no rush and an atmosphere that makes you want to order an extra ouzo and settle for the afternoon.
What to order: Fried zucchini, keftedes, and home-made dips.
Mavros Gatos - Psirri
A true neighbourhood spot with a warm, welcoming vibe and boldly flavoured Greek classics. We come here ofter when we are in Athens, it is one of our personal favourites.
What to order: The legendary potato salad and the village sausage.
Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani - Psirri
Part deli, part taverna, this spot specialises in Byzantine and Anatolian-style cured meats, cheeses, and mezedes. A great place for grazing with a glass of wine or ouzo.
