Neighbourhood Guide
Athens is a city of distinct neighbourhoods, each offering its own personality, energy and experience. Whether you want to be in the heart of the action, tucked away in a stylish enclave, or waking up to the sea breeze, this guide will help you decide where to stay based on the kind of Athens experience you're looking for.
City Centre & Surrounds - Everything at your finger tips
Syntagma - The city’s hub, perfect for first-time visitors who want to be within walking distance of major landmarks, high-end shopping and top hotels. A great mix of history and proximity. One of my favourite areas to stay in.
Monastiraki - Vibrant and historic, home to Athens’ best flea market, rooftop bars and a lively square with endless people-watching. A great option for those who love a bit of bustle and a mix of old and new.
Plaka - The postcard-perfect part of Athens. Neoclassical buildings, winding alleys and traditional tavernas make this one of the most picturesque areas to stay. It’s touristy, but for good reason - it’s stunning.
Kolonaki - Athens’ most upmarket areas, filled with designer boutiques, elegant cafés and refined dining. Perfect for those who love people watching and a stylish, polished city stay.
Koukaki - A more relaxed, residential area just a stone’s throw from the Acropolis. Loved for its café culture, slower pace and authentic feel. I love staying here when I want to feel like a local.
Makriyanni - A blend of upscale living and cultural attractions, this area sits right next to the Acropolis Museum and offers a mix of boutique hotels, great restaurants and easy access to historic sites.
Psirri - Known for its street art, live music and a buzzing nightlife scene define this creative district, which has transformed from gritty to trendy in recent years. A very happening restaurant and bar scene.
Akadimia - A blend of neoclassical grandeur and modern city life, home to Athens’ academic institutions, luxury shopping streets and cultural landmarks.
Beyond the Center - Best for a Relaxed Stay
Athens Riviera - Athen’s coastal stretch just 30 minutes from the city centre, offering beachside hotels, stunning sea views and a more laid-back, island-like feel. Perfect for those who want the best of both city and seaside life, you will find some Athens of the best hotels here. Piraeus - Athens’ busy port city and the main gateway to the Greek islands. There are two distinct sides to Piraeus: the practical, less charming area near the ferry terminals, where many stay overnight before an early departure and the more picturesque side by the marina, with its seafood tavernas and laid-back, local vibe. Would I stay in Piraeus if I wasn’t catching a ferry? No. But would I come for dinner or drinks by the marina (not the port)? Absolutely.
