Modern Greek
There’s something I really love about the way Sifnos does modern food. It might look simple on the plate, but there’s nothing basic about it. These spots are taking beautiful, local ingredients and doing something clever with them, they are creating refined, thoughtful dishes that feel light and effortless but are full of depth and intention.
They’re not trying to reinvent Greek cuisine completely, but they are polishing it - stripping it back to its essentials and building something new from what’s always been there. It’s delicate, creative and incredibly well done. Food that both tastes good and is considered.
These are the places I’d book for a special night or when I want something that feels a little more than traditional Greek food.
Top Pick: Cantina - Kastro
This one has my heart. It’s tucked just below Kastro, right by the sea and the whole setting feels like a secret. You walk down the path and suddenly you’re in this tiny pocket of magic. The food is next-level, I had one of the best dishes ever, a grey mullet with Greek salad essence. It was the freshest, delicious and yet most delicate piece of fish. There is a set menu that changes daily depending on what’s good that day. Everything they bring out is so unexpected, but it all just perfectly works. The flavours are clean, clever and feel totally connected to the island. The staff know their stuff and the zero-waste philosophy is something I really admire. It’s not just the meal, it’s the setting, it’s the staff it truly is an experience. I strongly suggest you book way before you leave home as it books months in advance.
Pro Tips for Dining Out in Sifnos
Book ahead - The best spots fill up fast, especially in peak season. Places like Cantina I would book before leaving home if you want a specific time.
Dress smart casually - the islands are a vibe and you don’t need to over dress.
What to order - Some places have set menus, others change theirs daily. Just ask what’s good and go with it - that’s often when the best meals happen.
Pace yourself – Things move slowly here in the best way. Order as you go, have another glass of wine and enjoy being exactly where you are.
Ask about the wine - Greek wines are having a moment and the local lists are usually full of gems. Staff are more than happy to recommend something great.
Sharing is the way to go - Greek food is made to be shared. Order a variety of dishes and pass them around - it’s the best way to try more and avoid any food envy.
Bostani – Verina Astra, Artemonas
Bostani is in such a beautiful location. It’s set in the gardens of Verina Astra, with views over the Aegean and this calm, peaceful energy that instantly slows you down. The food is very much garden-to-table - lots of what’s served is grown just metres away, there is something so special seeing the vegetable garden right close to where you are eating. It is refined food, with flavours delicate and well-balanced. It’s elegant in a quiet way and the perfect spot for that special dinner.
Omega 3 – Platis Gialos
This place is such a vibe. Right on the beach, high tables, some right on the sand, it’s no fuss - just seriously good food. It’s very seafood-focused, lots of raw or barely cooked dishes, and it suits the setting perfectly. You’ll find things like sea urchin, sashimi-style fish and the best wild greens with lemon and olive oil. It’s the kind of place you don’t want to leave I love it for lunch, order slowly, share everything and let the meal stretch out with the afternoon sun. You will have the most memorable lunches here.
Pelicanos – Faros
Pelicanos is from the same team as Cantina, you know it will be good. It’s set right on the sand in Faros, the menu is creative and playful, without losing that simplicity that Sifnos does so well. They’re known for things like langoustine with bottarga and manoura-stuffed churros, the bread is also a hit comes from the Bakery next door warm and fresh.
Maiolica – Platis Gialos
Maiolica is polished without feeling too done. The space is fresh and modern, but the atmosphere stays relaxed and easy. The menu leans Italian-Mediterranean with beautiful pastas, clever vegetable dishes and simple grilled fish. The drinks list is well thought out and the music is always spot on. I love coming here for a dinner that feels a little elevated, but still has that barefoot island energy.
